In my opinion this song is about his girlfriend
cheating on him forcing him to break up with her. He doesn’t want to leave her even though he knows that’s what has to happen. “The damage is in front of you” meaning she caused all this and now they both have to live with it. “So ask me questions” means he wants to figure out where it went wrong. What he did to make her cheat. “Pulling the band aid slow” refers to how long the pain lasts and that it’s a long sharp pain. Then As the song moves on so does his life but he still is lost. “My crew floats like astronauts” is referring to him not hanging out with friends anymore cuz he’s so heart broken he stopped spending time with them and just wanted to be alone. In the end he dreams she finds someone and is happy. Ultimately wanting her to be happy because he has pure love for this person. Finally, He just wants to freeze and explode referring to just restarting from a fresh sheet and move on with his life “and go home”. Then there’s obvious lines like “the hardest thing I’ve ever done is say goodbye to you” which is him breaking up with her and it’s the hardest thing he’s ever done. (Duh)
