I agree with he person who wrote above me. He wanted Kristin to be set free. He didn't want her to deal with his emotions anymore, on top of that he was going through a drug problem. He wanted her to find a man who would treat her the way she deserved to be treated. Unfortunately she didn't leave him for his drug problem but because he ended up cheating on her.
