The lyrics here are less about a message and more about an image.
Petty broad-brushes the setting/state of mind, and Campbell comes in and splatters the shit out of the canvas with screeching solos between each verse. Overall, a more musical than lyrical song, Petty's vocals serve as imagery to compliment music, rather than his usual lyrics-first method.
This seems to be mostly true of this album overall, one of the reasons it's a sneaky late-favorite offering. Mojo, throughout, is simple yet visionary in lyric, while intricate and punching musically. Very guitar-driven, lot of deep cuts, lot of Mike & Tom ripping loose on solos. Fun stuff.
