Waves Lyrics

There is a verse in this lyric that makes me doubt there might be a mistake. Everywhere on the web I do find "I can see the sands on the horizon everytime you're not around", but I think it would make much more sense if it were "I can't see the sands on the horizon when you're not around". Why? he says he's in deep water (face above water + can't touch the ground): you may enjoy this, but it doesn't seem to be the case - he says he's drifting away and it seems like he's drowning as he's pulling against the stream. So what can he do? try to reach the shore on the horizon. But if she's not around what will the feeling be? positive or negative? if she were around it would be easier for him to find the strength to reach the shore, the right direction to the sands, but she's not around, she's gone, so safety (the sands of the shore) seems to have disappeared and he can't see them, that's why I think "I CAN'T see the sands on the horizon when you're not around" sounds more logical to me. I think it often happens you can't tell if one says, for example, "I can do it" or "I can't do it"
