I think this song is about suicide. His girlfriend/wife is either dead or left him and he wants to die. The first line "It happens every time If it counts I'll lose my courage when I need it the most" means that whenever he's about to kill himself he backs out, or loses his courage. The chorus could mean two things in this scenario: he wants to be dead so he can be with his girlfriend and she can "take him out of the cold" of being without her, or if she is alive, he wants her to find him and take him back before he dies. "In one step I'll get closer to heaven than you'll ever know" is him actually trying to kill himself, whether it be the last step of his plan, or stepping off a tall building or bridge. "I'll take the first train out of this town with a glare in my eyes and my pockets full, ready to die and when I get hazy I will think just maybe you're out there somewhere" This is about him leaving town to commit suicide. I think the line "my pockets full" indicates he will step off a bridge with his pockets full of rocks or something heavy so he will drown, or he could have his pockets full of things that are important to him, such as photos or things from the relationship. If he gets hazy and wants to back out again, he is saying to remind himself that maybe she's waiting for him in Heaven, or it could mean the opposite if she is alive and he is second guessing himself because she's still out there and maybe he can be with her again. This is just my take on it, I could be totally wrong. I love this song, and Mayday Parade! This is one of my favorite songs by them.
