I think that people could interpret this songs meaning in different ways. However I think that the lyrics are about a friend/partner who has lied to the person singing the song, and betrayed them/went behind their back. They are now asking for forgiveness ("oh please take me at my word I'm desperate, I swear I never meant to hurt no one") However the person singing the song is not prepared to forgive them because the friend has hurt them so many times. (This is just my take on the song other people may have different opinions)
