Could it be talking about the Devil (or evil personified) taking hold of you when you are at your lowest / most susceptible??
Seems to set a tone of desperation and despair for the narrator in the beginning, and then moves onto evil gaining a control of that person through this opening that the sadness / seclusion has created.
