This song hits me very hard personally, to which I developed an interpretation.
My mother is terminally ill, and I've been taking care of her since I was a child after my parents got divorced. Now that I've become an adult I feel like these are promises I want to, but am hesitant to make. With taking care of my mum comes with a feeling of being tied down, unable to go out and do things in my young adulthood, but every time I mention it to her, she gets very sad that she feels like she's a burden.
Because of this I'm constantly stuck between fulfilling my own self interests and taking care of her. I sometimes "lock her out" to pursue happiness, but no matter what I do, she always forgives me and thanks me for being so kind and generous. She even apologizes herself for being such a trouble.
Every one of these lines I feel that I need to say to her except for one: "Even when you lock me out, I promise". This line in particular does sort of contrast the rest of the promises, doesn't it? Someone who is promising to not run away is the one who is locking the other person out. Instead of the narrator worrying about the other party locking them out, I'd figure the other party would be more worried about the narrator locking them out. Because of this I say the line that says "Even when you lock me out, I promise" isn't being said by the narrator, but by the person whom the narrator is addressing.
