In that interview, and also in one he did with Tim De Lisle for The Economist 1843 magazine, he revealed that he had the line "one day like this a year'd see me right" noted in his diary since his teens as something that would make a great song. He made three or four attempts at writing about his feelings about waking up that morning, and included that line from his teenage diary, as he felt this was the moment to use it.
When they played played it back for the first time, they felt the chorus, with the strings, was close to Hey Jude,; Garvie agreed, and said it was also like Loaded by Primal Scream. They then all felt it was right to do it because they all liked Hey Jude and Loaded. Garvie said he felt it was the "generous" thing to do, to give those associations to the listener.
