This was a very old song from the late 20's about going up to Chicago to get a job and away from the oppressive south. It was about the hopes of black Americans that the north was not so racially hateful. The song was covered by Canned Heat (funny name is because "canned heat" was the cooking fuel that was used by the army in the Korean and Vietnam wars!) And the band saw this as a good song about going up into NORTH Vietnam into battles!
