Definitely going with drug addiction. The song comes off as more than just a plea for help, but a confession. The narrator can't even help himself but to call the wolves (drugs) beautiful, which makes more sense than calling thoughts of depression beautiful. Hilltops can be an analogy for being high, and the whitest, tallest, biggest one can symbolize a particular drug, coke for instance. Mama being too wise to wait til they make nice may mean he accepts the consequence for his behavior, which is probably getting cut off to some degree, in terms of money, the relationship, the house itself.
