I have sung this song as part of my commercial folk repertoire for over 50 years. I still don't know the meaning of the reference to the Everly Brothers.
It could be just because the title is similar to the boys' last name. Or it could be because the guitar part sounds similar to one of the Everly Brothers songs, perhaps Wake Up Little Susie. Does anyone know? At this late date does anyone care? :-)
@Bluesbassdad, I no longer recall where I heard the story, perhaps told by Bob as an intro to a live concert track many years ago, but the inclusion of the name Everlys came from a wager that was made, betting The Kingston Trio could put the Everly Brothers name into one of their songs. He explained that at the time the two groups crossed paths frequently on the touring circuits.
