The song, in my opinion, is essentially about someone who was either very well known to a lot of people, but due to some unfortunate circumstances, ended up either dying, or falling far from grace and now lives as a recluse. However, after a long stretch of time, something overcomes him and pushes him to "come back to life", and reclaim the position of power, notoriety, or respect that kept him going. He wishes to take this path, no matter how much hardship is in his way, as he can't go on living the way he is now. It wasn't an easy road, or one that anyone helped him travel, but he kept his focus on the light at the end of the tunnel and made it back in even better form to the position that made him great. He was willing to fight to the death for his goals, or "until the world goes cold".
