I sort of take this as a message to act with the best intentions at all times in life, and not to let religion dictate what is "good" (or at least don't let religion's threats make you act "good").
That is God will know whether you are good if you did or didn't attend church. It is what is inside of you that counts ... not how often you went to church or read the bible. As hypocrites may hide behind church doors to fight wars and absolve themselves of guilt in the name of God (usually unjustifiably).
