Styles recently said in an interview that the lyrics are spoken from the perspective of a mother who has just given birth and told her baby will be fine, but she only has five minutes to live to due to complications from the pregnancy.
Very sad lyrics :(
@Robertbatemanart It was an interview in Rolling Stone, here's the relevant quote:
"'Sign of the Times' came from 'This isn't the first time we've been in a hard time, and it's not going to be the last time.' The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there's a complication. The mother is told, 'The child is fine, but you're not going to make it.' The mother has five minutes to tell the child, 'Go forth and conquer.'"

@Robertbatemanart Have to take what the writer has to say his meaning is behind his song. Beautiful song, but I'm from the USA and with all the mass shootings going on practically daily here it rang kinda strangely similar to how I feel after watching the trial for yet another school shooting with 17 deaths and 17:injured in Florida. With each mass shooting(we've been here before, will we ever learn)we have people pushing for gun control, others saying it's our 2nd amendment right to have them and no one will take my guns.Everyone agrees we have to protect our children in our schools...

But nothing ever seems to get accomplished as far as finding a solution.. It's sad that our society is going through all these senseless tragedies and it seems to no end.Love this song but it so reminds me of one of our biggest issues in these times.
