i&i grow up listening to this song, and agree with all who identified the general feel good vibes of this song, it is always in my rotation! as with many great reggae songs, relatively(seemingly?) simple lyrics present many possible meanings, and this one is no different...i&i have always felt that the lyric is
"come down, come down, come down, come down off di pomp and pride", and so agree with those who the rastafari ethos as driving the meaning, in other words drop the false pride and social status, recognize that we are all the same connected to everything in the universe, so love all and tonight can be a happy night...
simple in a sense, hence the reference to the doubt many have about simple solutions "Everybody's just crying sighing dying to see the light. And when they see it, they say it's not bright. Can this be right?", meaning everyone has been mistaken/misled into looking for an "otherworldly-amazing" answer when the answer is for each of us to come down off the false pride, and treat all with love!
