This song is about a girl who wants to be an independent, single, unattached, empowered 90's woman, but finds she is falling for one guy.

In the 90s, the "Girl power" movement was just starting to come into being after the wave of 80s feminism. Young women were still trying to reconcile the institution of marriage with independence and empowerment. The edgy, independent, almost masculine woman was something many young alt women aspired to be. It was cool. Even more so than today because society was a lot more sexist and feminism was still a bit fringy and not as widely accepted in western society as it is today. When she sings "must we all march in two by two?", she is expressing her frustration that despite her desire to be "single and thin" empowered woman, she still finds herself thinking about stuff like marriage to this one guy and becoming a comfortable fat person in a relationship, which in her eyes is soft and weak not sexy or empowered. For her the institution of marriage means giving up on her individuality as an empowered woman
