The chainsmokers describe this song as "a sentimental yearning for a reality that isn't genuine" and "an irrecoverable for fantasy that evokes nostalgia or day dreams". In an interview drew explains that this song is about a friend of his who was a drug addict and he was writing it from his perspective. To me this song is yes, about a man who has a girlfriend who both are drowning in the consequences of addiction, but to anyone, a situation that is so bad that you yearn for a happier reality. This song can be interpreted in many different ways

  1. A guy who has a girlfriend and they are both stuck in their lives, barely getting by. As he explains "if we go down then we go down together" he is saying how no matter what he will be with her and stick by no matter what anyone else thinks
  2. To me this song anyone can relate to. This song is about being in a tough situation and wanting to get out. Whether addiction, depression, or anything, we all have times in our lives where we desperately want to leave and go to a safe haven. We all want to go to a "Paris" of our. This song is about going to that place where everything is better while daydreaming for a reality that isn't genuine. It's about ignoring those who think your crazy and don't agree with you and going somewhere better. He knows that it isn't genuine and that no matter what he's stuck in this daydream, but life is better dreaming for him. This song is about hope and craving a new reality so badly that you daydream about it and go to so called "Paris" where everything is better.
