Like so many songs from Jay Farrar, I can rarely figure out what the lyrics mean. I was hoping to see some replies and feedback on this one.
I absolutely love Son Volt and the lyrics along with the music often convey a general feeling to me but like I said....Jay has a really different way of writing lyrics that for me are cryptic and a total mystery.
Maybe the songs about drugs (speed) ?
Jay (and Son Volt) for the most part write what I like to call "stream of consciousness" type lyrics, which at times are so esoteric/disjointed, and yes, cryptic, that they make Dylan's most obtuse writing seem downright plain in meaning by comparison.

Along with his general left leaning political views in some of the songs where the meanings ARE 'clear cut' (like "Jet Pilot" and such), and the band's use of country/alt-country instrumentation, I LOVE this sort of 'thinking man's country' music!!!

I used to think that maybe Jay was friends with some...
I used to think that maybe Jay was friends with some Pro Rally competitors since there is a "count down crew" at the start of every special stage or those events, and one does downshift often on those said stages.
But my guess is that it is his usual writing style, open to a 2001 A Space Odyssey/Kubrickian style interpretation by the individual listener. ;)
@Hapnincapt I always thought it was about giving in to getting married. I think he got married in 1996 or 1997 (can't find it). "Picking up the Signal" was released on Straightaways in 1997, so maybe that's it?
