This is my favorite song on the album currently, but I can hardly listen to it without the rest of the album, or at least the tracks from Father Reprise on.
I like to consider it in the context of those songs: Heathen's Kiss is about Ringle's pain and amber when he discovered that his wife was unfaithful, then Different Gray is about the depression following the breakup. I'm not sure what his family situation is, but to me the song, or at least the last two verses, sound like he's mourning the loss of his future, starting a family and having children.
