I think it's relatively literal. The protagonist is freed by having "nothing" showing a non-materialistic point of view towards everything. Ironically, they reach harmony by not having anything to tie them down. The song reminds me of Chris McCandless and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, very good book and also an excellent film.
