Very beautiful ballad here and agree w the above. Earle on acoustic guitar w not much else except some of his best lyrics ever. To me some of the best lyrics from anyone for that matter.

I think the 1st verse refers to the news of Townes passing would have shut down all the town (Fort Worth where he was born and grew up) if 'they only knew' maybe reflecting that Van Zandt had never received a wider and more deserving recognition.

References to his life are his time living in CO w his parents and at university in Boulder and time spent in TN recording and in and around the Nashville music scene.

The rest is Earle missing his friend while following in his footsteps through the similar studios, bars, coffee houses, halls and other areas the musicians haunt w his mourning being the title of the song.
