In my opinion it's a song about breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend (mistake), having regrets and wanting the person back, but the other person is on a different page now and probably moving on. It then triggers guiltyness and helplessness, and the more the person tries to get his ex back, the more apparent it's a failure. It's a never ending downfall in sadness.
