A ballad about Sir Donald Bradman, arguable the greatest every cricketer (and definitely the greatest ever Australian cricketer).

The lyrics are pretty self explanatory ... first verse is in regards to his first class debut (club cricket in Sydney).

Second verse is about his debut against England (the two dominant cricket nations at the time). He didn't have the best tour on his debut though.

Third verse is about his breakout series against the Poms.

Fourth verse is about the bodyline series (England bowled at the body / heads of the Aussie batsmen as at the time helmets weren't worn). It was the only tactic the English had to counter Bradman.

The fifth verse is about his retirement from the game and that he withdrew from the public eye after his playing days. The reference to wearing colours is that traditional cricket was only played at a test level and all wore white, except for their hats. The shorter versions of the game have teams wear coloured uniforms (and many cricket purists do not like the game ... hence reference to the "circus")
