At first I thought it was about a soldier who lost a companion, because of "misfire" and "watching through my fingers" (eg. hiding in trenches?). Also the line "Sleeping in the clothes you love - it’s such a shame we had to see them burn" seemed like maybe someone died in a fire (bomb, perhaps) however, it seems more realistically to be about cremation.
