The first three lines is like a question, with the song opens up with the persona driving back west through the "patches of fog", which symbolises the persona's confusion for his/her feelings towards another person. This is followed by "brights... listened to song", which conveys the idea that the persona and their 'someone special' has shared many bright and vivid memories together. The simple sentence "I was right where..." highlights the persona's belief in the importance of staying close to your loved ones

The next three lines is a response to the first three lines. "You were working a job", demonstrates how ordinary the second persona's life is, how little excitment they were having. Perhps the the second persona could be feeling as if the relationship was no longer as exciting, or spontaneous as it used to be. However, the second persona also acknowledges that "You were right where you needed to be", placing emphasis on the importance of staying together and looking out for that someone special. Perhaps both of them didn't have the confidence that the relationship would work out, but it seems as if they need each other, to push each other. This verse has been repeated twice to highlight the importance of their mutual understanding towards one another.

The chorus opens with the line "when all you have..." , simply suggests that the persona does not have much to show for their hard work/ effort when keeping a relationship going (Whether parent to child or even just friends). Next is the sibilance of all their dream "seem stuck", which creates rhythm and perhaps suggests that the persona wishes to see the seond persona get back on their feet and get something done. The theme of "change is coming", expresses the persona's simple approach to this idea, that they are neutral on whether it is good or bad, but they are willing to be taken "somewhere else" by the road. The "Road", could connote to the journey of life, a spiritual one, or it could be something as simple as a lust for travel.

The seond persona opens the fourth verse by the visual imagery of waking up to "rain drops", which establishes to the listeners that the second persona feels rather distant from the first persona, and is missing them dearly, since the first persona was out with their "band to succeed". Perhaps the "band" could give connotations to the first persona's passion and energy, that they have returned to their less-troubled self, something which the second persona would support.

After the chorus repeated for the second time, the repetition of "Don't forget all you've ever wanted is yours", demonstrates to the listners not just the fact that the secona persona was someone special to the first persona, but the fact that they will always remain loyal and caring. The speed of these lines places emphasis on the idea of 'time of friendship', never going to end, that it will go on forever.

The recurring motifs of "coasts" have been repeated to show distance between these two personas, and the contrast of different personalities they may exhibit to one another through their lifestyle habits. Somewhere in the middle, there are towns "that no one know", could perhaps mean that the two personas cannot recognise how similar they are, that their personalities overlap and intertwine with one another. Everyone is connected, some more than others, but this is an important aspect of life/journies that many overlook. Interestingly, the artist introduces the "local kid", whcih brings in an element of innocence to these two personas, once childish, playful and naive, along with having an attraction to adventure.

Overall, the key idea this artist is trying to convey to the listeners is that everyone in life is living their own journey, taking their own 'roads'. Everyone needs support and care, to feel confused and to feel love is all part of being human, and most importantly, to embrace 'change', and life take you on a journey.
