Under the Table Lyrics

In the past, Banks had experienced large amounts of emotional trauma, distress, and heartbreak resulting from numerous failed relationships. Even with the knowledge that the guy would break her heart, she struggles between keeping the relationship alive, later having her heart broken once again, and breaking things off, not even giving the guy a chance with her. Instead of choosing a side and ending her suffering, she decides to avoid making a decision by metaphorically placing herself “under the table”. Her amalgamated emotions soon become an internal issue. The chorus, sung higher to convey a more personal tone, is essentially Banks’ plea for the relationship to work out. The line “I’m tired of waiting for permission to love” shows how she’s irritated with waiting for her partner to finally recognize that she has meaningful love to offer him. “Heartbreak is your game” shows that already, she understands that she is trying to engage in a relationship with a player of sorts (or at least someone who isn’t very faithful). She explains that her attraction towards him is very strong when she says, “I got a problem, problem when I look in your eyes.” Also, in saying this, she may also be conveying that she can see his guilt whenever she looks at him face-to-face. Banks goes on to say, “you’re mine and you know it” as though she’s trying to correct him, but she is really trying to convince herself that maybe there is a slight chance that he would change just for her. Banks is truly in denial. In saying “won’t you be my problem, it’s okay with me if it hurts” she has completely auctioned herself off to this fickle fellow. She is okay with settling for someone who she already knows will bring her pain in the future, and it shows that she is overly desperate for love. She ends every stanza either asking for him to accept her love or illustrating how her indecisiveness as to how she will accept or revoke this guy in her life is becoming a troublesome obstacle for her own mental stability to overcome.
