I'm guessing here but this is the LP that really broke the Furs big time with a label that pushed the hell out of this release. They played all the nighttime talk shows and toured all over the world. I think the song relates to Richard Butler's growing discomfort over their soon-to-be worldwide fame: <I might make history Or or throw it all away> and: <I'm a town full of strangers Of big time and lies> - all the PR smoke blown up their ass. Their manager told them they'd be as big as the Cure but it didn't happen. <And words don't come close When your sweet dreams get lonely> This is the album the Furs all but disowned.
