I think this song is telling us that everybody has felt depressed and sad in some moment of their lives. We all go through them no matter how serious they are. But we (or at least I'm guilty of it) brush them off because we convince ourselves that there are people with worse problems than ours. We keep it inside, push all those "negative" emotions down, hold in the anger, dream to forget the nightmare... These little moments of sadness keep piling up until they burst on the most unexpected of moments or they make us bitter, make wrong decisions, etc. Aaaaand that's why "The world has coalesced into one giant mess of hate and unrest." because we decide to "...sing along a little fucking louder to a happy song." Of course, this is just my interpretation and it's probably lacking a lot of details... But yeah...
Also, this song could be about the world being effed up (politically, socially, economically, pollution, etc.), but all of us pretend to be unaware or ignore it. We're all to focused on celebrities, songs/happy songs, media, electronics... Unimportant things that in the long run, they rotten our minds
