It sounds to me like a very political song. I interpret the "domestic" as "national".
He's questioning what is happening, what the place is really about (what's missing here). There's some people (social climber) whose idea he does not accept (I refuse that climb), maybe he think they're just in the run for fame and fortune, or maybe they want to promote idea he doesn't share with them.
At last, everything is going south, or was it it already that bad ? was he just blind for a second ? (did I belong ?)
Anyway, now he's leaving but I get the feeling from the overall mood of the song that he would have liked to do something.
