Just pointing out, when he says "I'd paint a picture of my mother, but I can't recall her face. She's even far away at midnight, and her laughter haunts my dreams. I ain't never been this broken, I've got nothing left to give so now I'm searching for salvation as the winter closes in."

I think that he's specifically just talking about how he's so lost in his pain and regret, that feels as if even his mother is lost to him. Which I think highlights the underlying meaning of the song- the pin and regrets he's felt and gone through.
