This song seems to appear in my opinion about a boy who seems to be in a terrible situation and thought having a girl in his life relinquish the dark with the light. However it seems that even he can't have that especially when he says

So in the end lay me down could mean he wants to die after trying to find hope in his life only to watch it cause more internal conflict with other people like Samuel.
