I believe they were inspired by the situationists, and "Dérive" is a concept of that movement that seems to match the lyrics, here's an excerpt from the wikipedia article on "Dérive": "Dérive is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, on which the subtle aesthetic contours of the surrounding architecture and geography subconsciously direct the travellers, with the ultimate goal of encountering an entirely new and authentic experience." Seems to match lyrics about "bringing the city to life" and "there is no destination". Don't know about Tennhäuser tho, but it always makes me think of the "tears in rain"-speech given by Rutger Hauer at the end of blade runner.
