I personally believe this song's meaning is that David Gray has found a love he believes is true love, but he doesn't understand why or how. He's spent so long drowning in false love and hope, but finally found someone he doesn't want to lose so badly he wishes that they could just "sail away" together and forget about the past and everything that could break them apart or make them fall away from eachother. He states, "what will be will be" as he knows where they would be going is different and he can't predict the outcome, but they'll get through it together no matter what happens. Perhaps they already have so many things in their life that are trying to pull them apart.
