I feel that this song is about escaping the harshness of a reality (during a depression). Movies have (and still) provided a great escape for society from their worries, even if just for 90 minutes.
The lyrics about taping them off the telly, suggests that the idea of the shop isn't to make lots of money (at least not for corporations), but more so provide a service for the community that is obviously doing it hard.
