I'm really disappointed to see no comments on this song yet! I came here to see if there is a deeper meaning but there's no insight in the comments. So I'll share what the lyrics mean to me...
So when I see the first line "You can set yourself on fire " I think it's the author (im not sure if brendon urie is the main author or not) saying that his boyfriend/girlfriend was self destructive.
"She said at night in my dreams
You dance on a tightrope of weird
Oh but when I wake up you're so normal that you just disappear
You're so straight like commuters with briefcases towing the line
There's no residue of a torturer inside your of eyes" is the first verse. Its basically saying that (s)he has wild fantasies/dreams about this girl but in real life, she's average. Maybe she has no interest in the author and convays it to them; but the author ignores it and krrps looking for what they want to see in this girl.
"She said you're just like Mike
Love but you wanna be Brian Wilson, Brian Wilson
Said you're just like Mike
Love but you'll never be Brian Wilson" are the next lyrics. This part makes me have the theory that the author is making advices to her but she keeps brushing them off. I can almost see the conversation with the author and the girl-- maybe the author says something creepy and her response was to just play it off like it wasn't a big deal by saying "he's such a teaser" but in different words (if that makes sense ;P).
OK, so the next phase is the refrain which states "And I said (hey ay, ay)
If crazy equals genius (hey ay, ay)
If crazy equals genius
Then I'm a fucking arsonist (hey)
I'm a rocket scientist (hey hey)
(Hey ay, ay)
If crazy equals genius (hey)
You can set yourself on fire (hey ay)
But you're never gonna burn, burn, burn (hey ay)
You can set yourself on fire (hey ay)
But you're never gonna learn, learn, learn hey!". This means to me that he knows that his advances aren't welcomed. He thinks he's crazy, but in his delusions, he knows he's a genius. Then the first line of the song repeats, giving it emphasis. Maybe the author thinks that SHES the crazy one because she's self distucting but when he tries to come to the rescue, she shoves him aside. Every time she does this, the author has to pick up her peices when she self destructed (but your never gonna learn part).
The next phrase is "She said darlin' you know
How the wine plays tricks on my tongue
But you don't seem to change when you stuff all of
your feelings with drugs
Other boys you may have dated serrated your heart with a slice
But the cut of your love never hurts baby, it's a sweet butter knife". This says to me that the author got her drunk and got her to make empty promises, but since the author is a drug addict, she feels as if her promises aren't worth keeping to the author. Her past lovers so easily won her over, but the author is having a hard time doing this. The author then States that any ounce of her love is worth him coming back.
So then there's a bunch of repeated stuff that I already went over. Anyways! I hope this comment was insightful. Or maybe I'm wayyy off on the songs meaning but that's OK, because music is about our own interpretations. Have a great day and keep panicing at all the discos!!
