To me this seems to speak of depression, loneliness and a feeling of despair. I love the line "Where you absorb the echo" ... just paints such a vivid image to me. Also paints a picture of someone alone, that not even their echo is heard by others ears.
Could it be perhaps their descent to death (or is this merely that due to the depression and darkness that they feel like death / welcome it?)
Very open to interpretations ... I guess sometimes by saying less you are saying more (or in this case leaving more open for an individual's interpretation).
