@Listen2Reason THANK YOU everyone keeps ignoring the scarlet letter. It's a key part of the song. The situation may be arguable but it seems to be an unapologetic cheating song. Either the girl with the scarlet letter (who I believe might also be the singer) or the person that she's singing to, or possibly both, want to never mind any other relationship or situation they may be in and just 'dance.'
Until the girl with the scarlet letter (justifiably) feels like she's just on the sidelines , pines for more attention, and overthinks everything-
"I need a sign or a signal
I've overthought everything I can think of into symbol"
-even though from the start he has behaved towards her with confidence of their relationship and gives her affection. Perhaps she feels this way because he only behaves this way when they are together. She's left wondering because their dances are few and far between.
