It seems to be lamented the loss of honour (and perhaps it's replacement with commercialisation) in society today. The comparison appears to be 'ancient' times when warfare was common ... suggesting that the Gods of War brought honour and valour to humanity, more so than greed.

Could it be an argument of the lesser of two evils? i.e. ironic that we view 'ancient' civilisations as barbaric, yet society today has less valour, honour, and helping each other than those times (according to the narrator anyway).

I am not sure if the new dawn is the new world we live in now, or that from our current ways it is inevitable that a new dawn / world will rise from the ashes of our current one.
