I think sometimes songs are best when they are written with a personal meaning, perhaps that not many people will really understand. I think this is one of those songs.
That said, from what I can see the writer seems quite unhappy, and missing things the way they were. The first verse describes how we're supposed to be happy with what we have, and so we pretend to be, but really we're not happy at all.
The bit about being lost in her eyes comes across as talking about a past relationship where she didn't trust his commitment to her. He asks her if she really thought he'd rather be anywhere else:
"When I was lost in your eyes,
Was I trying to find
A way beyond
All the palm tree powerlines?"
And yes, it sounds vaguely similar to New Slang. We know already! ;)
