Definitely about Nuclear War but mixed in with other stuff.
I'd say it was a critique of modern society and the trivialities that affect people's lives when there is so much more important things to worry about (war etc). Always saw the lines "Me and my ex-lover/will accept each other" and "why don't you call me/I've got nobody" as sardonic. Ie bombs flying around and all you can think about is shagging. Thought the nobody might have had a double meaning (no body).
Not sure about the Town to Town bit and the fate of the wide open spaces- perhaps just areas devastated by war?
