Cover art for Hearing Aid lyrics by They Might Be Giants

I agree that this song is written from the perspective of an employee (possibly elderly, as TMBG are fond of the old folks :) relating how he's been insulted by a superior. However, there's a theory I'm pushing about one of the lyrics that nobody else seems to mention.

They all take that line "for king lazy bones like myself" as being the literal text of what the supervisor is saying. However...

The narrator has turned off his hearing aid, so he's not hearing the insult correctly. What TMBG have actually done is cleverly insinuated an obscenity without having to spell it out in the lyrics.

So in my view, t's not "for king lazy bones". The boss is actually saying "f***ing lazy bums like you." Which sounds much more plausible for something an irate boss might spit at an employee not doing their job.

It's exactly the kind of clever lyrical twist I would expect from TMBG. :)

My Interpretation

@Pantherinsnow I love this so much. AND I think you’re right. This is like a new discovery. I never knew the correct lyrics for this one and I’ve been singing “...not good enough for being lazy folks like myself.” Anyway, I’m going to take that theory you’re pushing. I’m probably going to think about all day. :)
