I think fellow talking about soldiers might be closer to the meaning. But to me this song speaks more to something like a mass shooting. The first half of the song almost seems like a mantra, trying to diminish the narrators actions. "I'm doing this terrible thing, because humans by their very nature are terrible. They deserve it, and I'm just giving in to my inherent nature." Then almost as a further justification. "Doesn't matter who I kill, people are dying to all kinds of random circumstance all over the world."
To me that makes the dramatic shift in the music a very straight forward and obvious image of the shooter drawing and acting. The music is very driving and aggressive, almost systematic and violent.
That still leaves some ambiguity at the end.
"You people are mistaken if you think that"
I mean that's what happens after mass shootings right? There's a media frenzy, everyone has their own theories as to why such senseless tragedy took place. There's a need to justify and understand because it's so tragic.
"I'm awake and celebrating anything that I've become."
The use of awake here could be implying that the narrator died, or that they are now sedated, imprisoned, or it could even imply some kind of regret. I think the statement here is trying to defy the idea that mass shooters do what they do for attention or fame.
