A lot of people say this song is about a soldier who misses a loved one back home, or that it's about a guy that's going to kill himself to be with a departed lover. I believe both are combined in a way.
The soldier is off at war, when he leaves his lover is perfectly fine. In the middle of his deployment he catches word that his lover back home has been killed. He is no longer able to take the grief from the losses he suffers and begins to lose his will to live, but he continues to serve his country and fight. Every battle he becomes a little more desperate to die, hoping he can take a bullet to end his suffering. He fights recklessly, rushing into the heat of battle. Somehow he always manages to survive though, but he truly believes this is the battle he will perish in because the odds are stacked against him.
I think this because the verse, "The stars at night, they lend me their light to bring me closer to heaven with you" as in the stars being the explosions and gunfire all around him. The light they bring is really death. The death that'll bring him to heaven with his lover.
Also the verse "After all that we been through" may suggest his lover also fought in the war, finding her demise at the hands of the enemy he now faces.
The verses "I've always been so true, I've waited for so long just to come hold you" also suggests that he never found another lover to go back home to, and he believes she was the only one he'd ever love.
I just have a hard time believing that the lyrics stand for a soldier missing a lover back home, because they feel more like the kind of lyrics you'd use to express grief for a departed lover.
