Listening to this song in isolation when it comes up in my iTunes shuffle or whatever, maybe it's not the Muses' best or most powerful song—but coming at the end of that first album, it's almost too intense to endure. The first time I met Kristin Hersh, I asked her how she could bear to sing this song, and she answered, "What's the alternative? To have this song in my head and not let it out? Nobody could survive that."

Every book I read in late 1986 is more powerful in my memory, just because at some point I listened to the end of this album while reading it. I still vividly remember being moved by the part of the "Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth" novelization where the Doctor leaves his granddaughter behind, but it wasn't until I was getting choked up over my physics textbook that I realized what was really going on.
