I think this song is about narcissim. This character is obviously a tormented individual that is seeking a feeling of glory and power just to make themselves not feel useless. They literally lie to themselves too. They start off as people who are just outright pathetic and honestly can't do anything right. They daydream that they're a great person who has everything and can do no wrong. Eventually they become so obsessed with this daydream they literally forget who they really are, and start to live their real life like they're in their dream world. That's what I think when I hear this.
