I've been lucky enough to see him perform one very rainy Valentine's night in SF back in the 80s in a little South of Market bar. The Blue Hotel in the song is an emotional place... it's about being lonely. Lonely highway, every room is loney. Life don't work out my way. Thank God they don't all write songs about how great love is, since heartbreak and lonliness are much harder to bear. At least we have Chris to serenade us as we cry into our pillows.
