I think it's pretty straight forward in my opinion. Someone he loves needs help and is suffering and he wants to be the one who saves her. It sounds like she gives him strength and hope in his own life so he wants to be there for her just like she is for him.
I guess this song sings to me because someone close to me seems to always slip into darkness and I try to be the one who saves her but it never seems like enough. I'm always afraid that one morning I'm going to wake up to find out something awful happened, then I'll never forgive myself because I'd suffer every ounce of pain for her if I could.
