I think this means his happiness is like clay and can be molded, or made, He finds the beauty of "her" or "it" through drugs, alcohol, or his relationship with his girl. I say drugs, and alcohol because of the lyrics "the bottom of the bottle" and "a shown up happening new vein"

At some point I think the song does talk about an actual woman, maybe Jennifer Chiba who was a singer, and it could explain the curtain opening and the singing out loud part, and he gets a feeling like he would with the drugs, perhaps its happiness.or bliss; a love for something

He talks about his arms being a dead matter of fact and she puts her arms around him like a towel on a rack just limp and there without meaning. I think that is saying the drugs have killed that beauty he does see at times, and there are probably marks on his arms from needles or such which makes his drug use apparent or "matter of fact" as it is written. When he talks about seeing her face staring off into space its reflecting of his own high, and what he perceives. He feels guilty when his love see him like this. "Don't Look at Me" is written

In the end I think its a mix of the highs and happiness he gets from the girl he loves. and from substance abuse all rolled up and combined with guilt.

Beautiful song, whatever it means.

My Interpretation

Chiba entered Elliott’s life by providing him drugs. He said she started things as Elliott’s drug dealer, she was one of his connections, and this is how their relationship started. Elliott went up living with her and she became his girlfriend. ‘Usually it is the women who move in with their drug dealers’, he said, ‘but in his case he was a man moving in with his female heroin dealer’.
