I may be way off, but I see a story of learning (being taught, perhaps by a therapist?) to live without an addiction (maybe a proper addiction like alcohol or drugs, or maybe avoidance using TV or food or video games). Slowly coming around to reality: the things you don't trust are your feelings (you're human, and as much as you wish away anxiety or sadness, you need the dark to see the light, and not having feelings is actually a pretty awful experience) so I think this is about learning to be mindful, to feel without judgement or avoidance, and pay attention to what the feelings are trying to tell you.
